Due to my current extreme lack of funds, I am trying to get decent usability in GarageBand on the cheap. I would like to be able to use about 5-6 tracks at a time with 3-4 of them being real instruments and the rest either loops or tracks imported in. I can mute some tracks to help in playback/recording if need be but have to have at least 2 tracks (guitar with effects) playing while recording a 3rd guitar/bass track.
Since I do have a B&W G3, I was thinking of upgrading the processor and running GarageBand on that since I can have the money for it rather quickly. I was looking at either:
-800MHz G4 upgrade
-1GHz G3 upgrade
I have 512MB RAM in it already.
So my main question is if anyone here is running GarageBand on their own upgraded B&W G3 and, if so, what kind of performance do you get from it? Also, which of the 2 upgrades mentioned above do you think would be better for this? Does the extra speed of the G3 allow it to perform as well or better than the G4 for this application?
I realize in most cases the G3 will be faster overall but since I am doing this for use in GB, is it better to have the extra speed or AltiVec?
