Hey guys. My university, instead of having cable, gives us TV through the internet. Problem is, if I want to record a show, I can't just pop a tape in the VCR. Bittorrent is out of the question because I'm sure they a) block ports and b) record bandwith usage. So, how do I record the video that is playing on my desktop. Thanks.

What format is it in? (What player are you using to play it with?)
There is a way to record streaming Windows Media using ASF Recorder X (I haven't gotten the GUI to work, but you can also open the package and use mmsclient in the terminal). Unfortunately I don't know of any way to record Realmedia streams.

If you could find out a way to read those streams with VLC, you could set the app to save the programs to disk.
That's what I'm doing at my university, as they're using Videolan Server for streaming - as a matter of fact, Videolan was born as a student project in my university.
Can we have more info on the app you're using ?
