I just noticed that there are only four fonts available in my Mail's font panel, and I have no idea why. Baskerville, Big Caslon, Didot and Copperplate. I don't often use additional fonts in Mail, but I wanted to on this occasion. Obviously, I have many more fonts than this available to my other applications. Perhaps I'm missing really elementary, but I am confounded.

That's odd. I just checked my Mail.app and hit cmd-T (show fonts). The usual Cocoa font panel appeared and a bunch of my fonts (those you didn't mention as working) worked fine. Try nixing your Mail.app prefs.

Are you sure you haven't accidentally selected a font group? (Not trying to be condescending; sometimes it's just the simple stuff.)

LOL! Thank you, Chuckit. How could I have been so dense? My font pane was resized so that only the family (Classic) and not my collections were showing. Well, if it was not obvious to me, I assume other people have been confused as well.
