By accident, I had a certain filename that looked odd in the Finder. You can reproduce it by naming something like this:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA .txt

That is 30x capital A, a space and a .txt extension. Rather than keep the ellipsis in the middle when resizing column view, it garbles the text. Also when you place the cursor over the name, the space shows as a tab. Using underscores works fine but it's a little odd as most filenames are fine.

I'm using 10.3.7.

Using 10.3.7, I can't reproduce it. The ellipsis works as it's supposed to in column view, even when resizing.

I remember I had issues with text display in the Finder, and I tracked it down to a bad copy of Lucida Sans in one of my various font folders. After trashing it and restarting, everything was back to normal. You can try to see if it's the same problem or not.

Thanks for the info. I checked my fonts and they were ok. I don't have Lucida Sans though (just Grande and Handwriting).

I've discovered that it's because of the Tinkertool hack that turns off anti-aliasing. I've just gone back to normal and the garbled text is fixed. I have to say that after using aliased text for a while, the anti-aliased ones look kinda odd.

Bah, I meant Lucida Grande, not Sans, but yeah, good to know you found the problem.
