I got my daughter a G4 Powerbook for Christmas. She has a lot of files, etc. she wants to copy over and burn on CD's from a G3 running Mac 9.

When we went to a directory and chose to share, we received a message to place file share execution into control panel. We found this and placed in into the Control panel, rebooted.

When we tried this again, we get message that file share execution not found go to original Cd and install, etc. We have no idea where the original system disks are. Is there any way we can activate file sharing so we can grab the files and get them into the G4 to burn CD's?

If the G3 has Firewire it would be easiest to boot it in Target Disk Mode (hold down T while booting) and connect them with a Firewire cable.

perhaps try it the other way around. activate file sharing on the powerbook, then try connect from os 9 on the g3 and copy the files over.

the most reliable way is usually FTP*. In the OS X Sharing prefs turn on FTP sharing, in the network prefs write down the IP address it gets when the two computers are networked, then get an FTP client for the OS 9 machine, enter the IP address and your OS X login and password and go to it.

*actually the most reliably easy solution I've found for local file transferring, especially across different OSs, has always been Hotline, but since most people think they're evil now and their homepage gives a 403 error....
