Think iTunes for movie files. The interface is nearly identical but of course, the software is for video instead of audio. Seems very solid for a 1.0 release. The only drawback is that it only appears to work for Quicktime based video only. Anything QT supports, it will support .... so DIVX and AVI are good to go. But there doesn't appear to be any support for Windows Media and Real Player files. I think it should still be able to organize such files ... but just pass off the playback to a user-specified player (Windows Media Player, Real Player, MPlayer, VLC, etc.). Discuss!

it seems like a good idea. only problem i had with it is that it would not import a .mpeg until i renamed it to .mpg, and it copies all your files to an itunes like library. at about 700mb a movie (dvd rip .avi) that takes a while.

and i don't keep any movies on my harddrive, they are just too big, so the app kinda loses its point.

Well just like in iTunes you can turn off the option of having the app automatically organize your files (and thus copying them). I too don't have a lot of full length movies on my HD for the same reason. It's just easier and more convenient to buy the DVD and watch it on the big screen. The only thing I tend to have on my HD are movie trailers and other miscellaneous movie clips. But for college students or people who use their Mac as their home entertainment center this would be a a very useful app ... especially if it supported Windows Media and Real Media files.

I don't think this app is to categorize your full-length movies [try Delicious Library] .... but instead, organize your video 'clips' ....

I haven't tried it yet, but if it uses quicktime to render the video files, .. then it won't be able to play A LOT of .avi files that I have.

Quicktime can't play a lot of .avi files while VLC does play them.

Has anyone had problems with their .avi files?

[wmv and real video files, i'm not surprised that they don't support it]

There's also iVideo, which took more of an iPhoto-like approach.

The netflix integration seems like a weird choice... i guess i can sort of see how they wanted to parallel the music store, but doesn't that sort of suggest that you get DVDs from netflix and then rip them and organize them with iFlicks?

You should be able to play almost everything if you install the 3ivx, Divx, and AC3 Quicktime components.

Those are probably ones with WMA audio or something silly like that.

i'm not debating that. Its not a contest. I just think its hilarious that 2 different developers came out with near identical icons within weeks of each other.

i thought so too at first but i launched both at the same time and placed them side by side in the dock.

IMO

on print and on the web the iFlix icon is better...

But in the dock i live the "3d"ness of the popcorn icon (better shading) and better angle. its sits in the doc better for me...

I probably won't be seeing the iflix icon too much though as i don't have a real use for it, just call me simple finder movie boy...

Really like the App, once Tiger with it's new codec comes out if I can find a way to get all my downloaded divx files into nice avc files I might buy it... if I can you know... get money that I don't spend on something else. I hate shareware cause I never end up buying it, but this is good looking enough that it just might work.

That's why I said "almost everything." There are certain codecs that will never have support on OS X and others that will never be ported to a Quicktime plugin.

any word about the status of this program?

I'm currently using MovieGallery, and it's good, but it doesn't give the option to automatically copy your clips into it's own database for storage like iTunes [can].

Version 1.1 is out now. Anyone care to check it out and try to see what they changed from version 1.0 to 1.1 since they won't say.

It appears they removed the toolbar and the artwork pane. Having never really used either version, I don't see any other differences.

The GUI is a lot more streamlined and aesthetically pleasing. Doesn't seem like such an obvious iTunes clone now. The ability to launch movies in external players is very nice. Just wish there was a way to specify a default movie player so once it was set you could just double click a movie and play it. As it stands now you have to always use the Control - Play With - menu. Other than that it looks really good.

This is something I would expect from Apple in iLife, but considering all of the legal issues I guess they won't touch it. In the meantime, this app seems like an excellent tool for those who keep movies, music videos, movie trailers, and other miscellaneous video clips on their Mac.

Don't let the "Default Player" preference fool you now...

(Preferences->Players at the very top)

Anyways, sucky weather we got now isn't it?

I should have made myself more clear. The preferences allow you to set a default player for all movies. What I am talking about is the the ability to set a default player for an individual movie. For instance, if a movie is a Windows Media file I would like to designate that particular movie to open up in Windows Media player so that when I double click it it opens in that player. But of course, I don't want to set the overall default player to be that because then all my QT based stuff won't play.

And yes, the weather does suck today in STL!
