Free iChat screen name without .Mac

Has it been always possible, since iTools turned into .Mac, to get an iChat screen name while signing up for a trial .Mac account, which does not expire at the end of the trial? The relevant link is <http://www.mac.com/redirects/ichat/index.html>. The page displays the following statement in a graphic:
