I have a large library of mp3s on both my desktop and my powerbook. The mp3s on the desktop all have ratings between 1 and 5 stars. The mp3s on the powerbook do not have ratings. Is there a file I might copy from the desktop to the powerbook to transfer all the ratings to unrated songs all in one go, rather than having to go through all the songs again, or is that metadata part of each individual mp3?

The metadata is part of each individual MP3 (or AAC). I don't think iTunes indexes it separately.

The 'iTunes 4 Music Library' and the 'iTunes Music Library.xml' files carry at least the Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, and the ratings. (genre, track name, artist, album art, BPM, album title are carried on the ID3 tag) The trick to replacing these on your PB is to make sure your iTunes preferences and set up are identically on both machines, then replace those two files. (Your music library needs to be in the same named folder and organized by iTunes and MAKE A BACKUP)

When I had a desktop and Powerbook, I would synchronize the libraries and it worked well as long as a) The Library folder names remained identical b) I let iTunes organize my files and c) I synchronized after any change. If you make edits on both machines you can't synchronize the changes. You'll have to decide which file is more important and overwrite the less important file.
