Hey all-
I had recently posted in a topic on Word 2004 being slow while typing, but I think this is a different problem.
When I am scrolling in Word, with the scroll wheel, the screen will stop scrolling, the processor usage will jump up to 100%, and it will hang like that. I have found if I click (left) somewhere on the page during this "hang", the scrolling will happen, VERY fast, and erratically. Almost like the program is waiting on a click input for some reason.
Anyone noticed anything similar? I am using an intellimouse explorer (which I have used for 5 yrs, so I don't think it's the mouse), 10.3.7, 1Gb ram, and a new proc upgrade card (500Mhz--> 1.4 now). I don't think this is new to the processor, as Word was working OK after I did the upgrade, but recently I have been doing more word processing than before, so I can't be sure.
Any help? It's REALLY annoying...

I had the same problem. Went back to Version X for that reason. Anybody have a fix?

Yes, I know I could buy a PC, but why?

By any chance did you have Endnote installed? I recently installed endnote (after buying v8, since v7 doesn't work with Word 2004), so that is the only other change I have made.
If anyone knows of a fix, or cause - it would be appreciated -
Thanks,
Lee

I did but removed it. It was still slow. I even created a new user and tried Office 2004 on just that user and had the same problem. I can't believe how bad Office 2004 is.

Office 2004 sucks. Period.
I'm sure you could find *something* redeeming about it if you are a true optimist, but it is mostly giant step backwards that you PAY for. X is quite a bit better for a number of reasons. For my complete rant...

Hate to add the pile, but after using Word 2004 from the moment it came out, I have to agree: it is not an improvement from the former X version. My main gripe is simply how slow it can get, even on a G5 2Ghz with 2.5 Gigs of RAM.
I do have a semi-fix for the scrolling problem: turn off Live Word Count in Prefs. I think there are a couple of other things to turn off that also slow down Word, but I can't think of them offhand. Just find anything Word does that is computing in the background, and turn it off. I am an author and have 300 page Word docs, so I've had to figure this out in order to not do a slow burn while using Word.
If Entourage 2004 wasn't such a great upgrde, I would have downgraded to Word X, and sold my Office 2004. I just keep hoping that Microsoft is embarrassed by how crappy Word 2004 is, and is coming out with a fix.

Yeah, I turned off spelling, grammar, count, etc, which helped a little, and now that you mentioned it, the problems did seem to get worse as the document got longer - I am around a 20 page doc, which this program should EASILY handle on a 1.4Ghz G4. Embarrassing.
We should not need G5s to word process. Ridiculous.

I think this is a bug with the Microsoft Mouse drivers.
I have two desktop machines - one has a Logitech MX1000 and one has a MS Intellimouse Explorer. The machine with the MX1000 does not have this problem. The one with the MS mouse & drivers has the exact same problem you describe.
Either replace your MS drivers with something like USB overdrive, or pick up a Logitech mouse and use the Logitech drivers.
