Suddenly, iPhoto 4.0.3 is unusable. It crashes regularly. Here is what I've done to troubleshoot:

1. Repaired permissions
2. Reinstalled Mac OS X v10.3.7 (archive and install)
3. Trashed the com.apple.iPhoto.plist preference file
4. Removed the iPhoto library and started from scratch

Nothing has fixed the problem. Each time I trash the preference file, I can open iPhoto once. The next time I attempt to open it, the app quits just after the "loading photos" message appears in the window. All this with zero pictures in the newly created library!

I'd appreciate suggestions of what to do next.

not sure there is one, but have you looked for/deleted an iPhoto cache? (~/Library/Caches/)

There is one. I deleted it. Still crashes.

That's the culprit. Remove it or the hole DivXNetworks folder and see whether that fixes the problem.

Edit:

I think you need remove the following one to keep the above mentioned lib from being loaded:

/Library/QuickTime/DivX 5.component

Thank you very much for your help! I removed both the Divx folder and Divx Quicktime component and now, iPhoto opens. I opened iPhoto several times with no crash. Then, I trashed the prefs and the cache, copied my original iPhoto folder with 1000 photos into my Pictures folder. iPhoto shows all my albums in the left window, but there are no photos in any of them or the library itself. (Yes, the photo files are actually in the iPhoto Library folder.) What do I do next?

Also, iPhoto worked fine in the past with Divx 5 installed. Do you have any idea why Divx 5 would now cause a problem?

Try launching iPhoto with the Command+Option+Shift keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. You may lose some roll and/or album info. But, it the results are not to your liking you can delete the new, rebuilt library and go back to the original.

Thanks for the tip. It worked nearly perfectly. I have to remake my albums, and a few photos are out of order, but they are all there now!
