now with the addition of the thumbnail scroller on the top, photos are even smaller.

are there any workarounds or buttons to make the photos full screen or to remove that bar?

Huh? You can simply toggle the slider at the bottom of iPhoto v5 in order to change the size of the thumbnails...

I notice this too - especially in "editing" mode.

(it's probably only an issue for those of us with laptop-size screens)

Anyway, it appears that there's an option in preferences to have photos edit in a completely separate window - I'd see if that doesn't fix the problem for you...

I don't feel that we've lost a significant amount of real estate due to the addition of a thumbnail scroller since the bottom tool bar was made proportionally smaller (I always thought it was over sized and often useless, but ...).
Opening a photo for editing in a separate window was always an option, but I find that method inconvenient.

You could always hide the viewer. View > Thumbnails
