Hi,
I wish to create a plain webgallary, sort of like a .Mac webgallary, showing thumbnails to start with with the option to click on those to see each picture in large with navigation arrows underneath them (and that doesn't cost $100).
Does anyone know any free templates that can do this?
I want to be able to insert such a gallary on the webadress I am currently using.

Hope someone can help, thanks.

You can use Gallery for this. It's free software and works on any webhost that supports PHP.

I've got a how-to describing installing it on OS X (which won't help you since you'll be installing it onto a webhost), but it also describes how to install the iPhoto plugin that lets you integrate with it in a hassle-free manner.

Gallery is nice. I tried a few a while back and then settled on PhotoSite TimeSaviour (free). Its 5-start rating on Version Tracker implies that others have found it useful too. It has quite a few options to set up directories, browsing, thumbnails, and frames in a number of different ways. Only drawback is that there ARE quite a lot of settings that you'll have to figure out to get exactly what you want. None of it is hard to figure out .. just a little time consuming on your first attempt.

It depends on what you want to do. Gallery is much more elaboate. It is NOT designed for whipping up an html page full of photos. It is a full fledged gallery. You can create photo albums (and sub albums). You can search for specifc photos, etc.

Go to the Gallery website for more info http://gallery.menalto.com
Take a look at some of the sample galleries.

If you want to just create some photo pages for your website, there are other tools for doing this.

Thank you for your suggestions, I've been looking into them and they all look nice.

Nevertheless I have now created a webgallery using photoshop and published it through an ftp-program. This was very easy and didn't take long to figure out. It must have been the easiest way to do it.
However, the next time I want to publish photo's I might need to create some kind of subfolders for each picturegallery, making it possible for the viewer to choose between them when entering the site.

How is that done?

my site ( http://tjclark.ath.cx/ ) just uses text links to each gallery. galleries themselves are generated in iphoto using BetterHTMLExport (about $20, http://www.droolingcat.com/software/betterhtmlexport/ ). it's a good intermediate option, not quite as ugly as photoshop or iphoto default galleries but not a full fledged server side system either, and the customizability is there if you want it.

I think I will try that! That was what I was looking for.
How do you create the page with the text links then, what programe are you using and what is this function called? (hyperlink?)

I tried to create my webgallery using iPhoto but apparently the first page on my ftp-server needs to be named index.html. The default name for the first page in the iPhoto webgallery however is site.html wich can be changed to index but this causes some other problems since the following thumbnail-pages point at the site.html-name by default wich I don't know how to correct.
That was a long explanation and I think I'll stick to my photoshop-gallery for now.
You can see my page at

that's a lovely mclaren.

i update the front page and rss feed of the site by hand, using bbedit lite/textwrangler. http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/ . having enough knowledge of html to be able to update a simple page by hand is a good thing. also, i hate to have messy html/poor whitespace etc., which is another reason to do it manually.

several good options:

* http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpautogallery/
* http://sourceforge.net/projects/dndgallery/
* http://sourceforge.net/projects/tftgallery/

all are php, and a lot simpler than gallery... they're all drag and drop apps.

Take a look at BetterHTMLExport plugin for iPhoto. It has many themes to choose from and works from within iPhoto.

myPhoto prides itself on simplicity. I haven't used it, but it might be what you want.

If your web server supports php and mysql, you might want to try Coppermine. It's a package of scripts that implements a customizable web-based photo album that you can manage entirely through the web, similar to pbase. I tried a variety of desktop apps but found Coppermine to best meet my needs. I've even created separate accounts for relatives to use so I host their photo albums on my site. It's pretty easy to install, it just requires php and mysql on the server.

I've been eyeing a program called Galerie. Haven't used it yet, so I can't speak for it. Looks pretty neat though.
