Stuffit won't start! Anyone help?

I am using Mac OS 10.3.7 on my brand new iBook but whenever I try to unstuff a file stuffit just bounces and nothing ever happens. This started after I ran all the Apple recommended software updates.
I upgraded to a newer version of stuffit and none of the programs will run, they just bounce.

Any tips? In Mac OS 9 I'd just throw away the preferences and re-download the program and it always fixed it but how do I fix something like this with OS X?

Wait until it finishes loading (may take a while), then disable automatic version checking in the preferences.
