After he updated to 10.3.7 Safari started beachballing when you click the Add button to add a bookmark. I tried deleting the bookmarks XML file and re-importing his bookmarks in, but the same problem cropped up. Any ideas?

This is part of a bigger set of nuisances that occurred right after the update, including Photoshop CS beachballing for a long time at "Reading fonts" during startup, and Photoshop freezing while opening files that before never caused problems.

So I started up in Single User mode and did a disk check (only minor errors), and then ran DiskWarrior. No luck--Safari and PS problems remain.

I can confirm the Safari problem. It just takes a really long time to add some bookmarks.

Ridiculous.
Genius. You know who.

Have you tried deleting the favicons in the Preferences folder?

It's a good idea to repair permissions before and after any update ..

Also you can try this ..

Clear all your caches with
Cache Out X
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9538

Download and run
Preferential Treatment
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14450

Drag your user fonts folder to the desktop and see if that solves it.
You can trash that fonts folder as the system will replace it ..

I couldn't edit my post so I am writing this one ...

If you move your fonts folder to the desktop you'll have to reinstall any third party fonts if you trash it ... (photoshop etc)
