I was hopeful that GB 2 would stop choking on a few real instrument tracks, but apparently it's just as bad. I've got 3 real instrument tracks (two guitar, one bass) and one uncomplicated drum loop, and if I add in a midi track, GB gets cranky and yells at me.
Questions:
1) Can anyone else report similar results on hardware superior to mine: G4/533, 896 RAM, big, fast drives, m-audio mobile pre, m-audio keystation?
2) Can anyone report whether or not Logic Express will do this on hardware similar to mine?
The issue now is whether or not to buy a Mac mini for recording. If there's better software, then I'll do that. If the software bogs down regardless of what hardware, I won't bother buying a new machine.
Thanks in advance!

If you're done editing the tracks, you can cache them to disk. I'm not sure where your bottleneck is, but I'd say either processor or RAM bandwidth.

Is this caching process new to GB2 or do you simply mean that I can save the file?

That's what I'm getting at. If other people are running, say, a G4/1.25 ghz and are experiencing the same problem, I won't bother upgrading. If people running a 1+ghz G4 are NOT experiencing this problem wrt live tracks, my discover card is ready and waiting.

I don't have GB 2 as yet, but I've been using GB 1, both on a PowerBook 867 and a dual G4 1.4. I noticed a huge improvement with the dual (partly due, no doubt, to disk access speed).
If you do upgrade your processor, I'd suggest a dual.

Caching to disk is a new feature of GB2. Steve demoed it during the keynote. Looked like it was just a check box near the instrument description.

Ah! It's the little lock! I have 3 real instrument tracks + one drum track going right now with no problems. I'll report back and let you know if I'm still having the problem after locking.
