Having just overwritten a VERY important file I am trying to get it back using Norton Unerase.

The first problem (I,m sure there will be more) is that the application can't see ANY drives to search. Any ideas why (journaling, permissions etc?)

Running 10.3.7 on a 1Ghz G4 Tower

ANY help obviously greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Norton sucks.

Try Data Rescue from Prosoft.

If the file is really overwritten, it's gone and nothing will bring it back.

Well it's overwritten in the sense of having been deleted, sorry bad terminology. Plenty of space on the drive so I'm hoping it's still there.

Was wondering. I have a version of the file that was corrupted when the server went down while I was saving it. I guess that's a goner too?

Some applications do "safe save", that means they save the new version as a completely new file and if that succeeded (and only then) they delete the old file and rename the new one to the old name. If you have such an application a failed save does not endager the old copy.

If I only had a dime everytime Norton screwed something up on OSX ...

Typically I would agree, though it seems that Norton is just plain failing this time and not destroying as it usually does!

Well, this is what happened. had a go at the file with data rescue but no joy. No app seems to be that good at finding erased files, they seem to concentrate on recovering files from damaged discs!

Anyway, finally took the drive out of the file server, it's not the system drive, and installed it inside anothe G4tower. Installed Norton on the other tower and bingo , drive seen. Two hours of file searchng later, ding ding, file recovered!!

Obviously something is also screwd in server system land s today off came ALL the data and I wiped the server system drive and reinstalled the OS from scratch. All data back on, re-install Norton and now all the drives are visible again.

Not sure I trust Norton not to screw around with the machine so would not plan on running any of the other 'utilities', but fair's fair, it gotthe file back!

btw, previously on every restart teh server would say that a variety of Norton kext files were not available or installed properly.

Anyway alls well that ends well and the main thing is that nobody learned anything from the experience!!

REMOVE NORTON UTILITIES FROM ALL MACHINES.

DO IT NOW.

Norton Utilities are no longer available for Mac OS X, and with very, very good reason.

Stay away from them. Fear them.

My advice.

(If you need more details, plenty of them, from numerous ex-users, do a search of this forum.)

Please remove them properly. That means including the Kexts and stuff it installs.
