backup purposes of course

anyway before i get flamed for not searching, rest assured.. i did. and from what i did read on the many threads here on tka i found out that there were many options to try. ill list a few as well as the apps i have.

first method:
fastdvdcopy 3 - supposed to be a simple one button way to copy a dvd movie and then reburn on to a blank dvd-r. result: easy one button copy and burn. downside: of the 2 test movies i burned, neither played beyond 10 mins. the movie would freeze while test playing on my home dvd player. oh that and the dvd menu was worthless. i couldn't navigate to scene selection.

second method:
mactheripper, dvd2onX, toast - a little more complicated but easy enough to figure out. i used mactheripper to 'rip' the dvd resulting in a video_ts folder. i then loaded that folder into dvd2onex to compress it down to size. no problem there. went toast and chose data/dvd-rom utf and dropped the video_ts and audio_ts folder into the window and clicked burn. i did this with three dvd-r's (all wasted). i pop up window came up reporting some sort of illegal procedure. i figured it had something to do with the copyright protection on the dvd's.

third method:
mactheripper, dvd2onex, popcorn - same procedure as above dropping the video_ts folder into popcorn. same resulting popup displaying illegal procedure.

total dvd's wasted 6.

what the heck if anything.. am i doing wrong here. i just wanted to back up my own personal dvd's.

ok so right now i have an video_ts folder compliments of dvd2onex that i wish to burn to a dvd which i can then pop into my home dvd player. please help a fella out here.

Just use MacTheRipper and Popcorn. Popcorn can compress the VIDEO_TS to fit on a single layer DVD.

when i tried burning the video_ts folder with popcorn i recieved two different error messages. one was illegal procedure making me think that the copyright protection wasn't removed when using mactheripper.

the other error i recieved was 'medium error' which makes me think there was something wrong with the dvd-r i was using. i didn't really understand what the problem was considering the blank dvd-r was able to be burned using the finder.

What movie are you trying to back up. There is a wonderful new Sony ani-copying "gotcha" out called arccos. Mactheripper is supposed to work with it, but I couldn't get it to work with The Grudge. I figured out a CRAZY long alternative, but it involved way too many steps to even consider writing in this thread unless it's the issue you are having.

I've used DVD Backup with no problems. Maybe you should try that one instead of MTR. I just downloaded MTR, but haven't used it yet so I couldn't comment on it.

ok i've ripped and compressed.. i keep getting medium errors on new blank dvd-r's. does it have to do with the dye (coloring) on the disk? kinda has a purplish tint. memorex disks. should i go with the standard gold/silver looking disks?

this sounds a lot like a hardware issue. either you have a bad batch (or bad brand, but memorex isn't unknown) of blanks or your burner is failing. start ruling things out.

all DVD-R blanks I've ever used are purple, and I've had about 1 coaster in 200.

Not sure if Spiderman 2 or Ray have regional encoding on it, but if your DVD does, you have to use MTR with the correct region encoding set or something. I think it defaults to none so if you don't change it, you may run into errors.

Everyone seems to have tunnel vision on the decryption not working. Since the encryption on DVDs is basically a joke, I have to doubt that is the problem. To validate this claim, would you please do me a favor and try playing the VIDEO_TS folder produced by your decryption app (MTR?) in DVD Player or VLC? If it plays, you can ignore all theories and suggestions involved with decrypting and focus on the burning aspect, which I suspect is where you'll actually find the source of the problem.

Hey there,
If I ever got a Double Layer DVD Drive, something like:

MCE Lucid-M8X

Could I just duplicate an entire commercial (but owned) DVD onto one of those discs without compression (maintaining everything intact)?

Thanks,
BD

I hear that the double layer media is still too expensive to do that. Maybe in a few years though.....

I mean, if I bought the above and had the media (regardless of cost), could it be done?

Yep. Commercial DVDs; MTR + Popcorn. Works like a charm.
I make duplicates of kid movies (and store the originals safely) for my kids to abuse.

ok do you have to play the movie in it's entirety to unlock all the chapters before ripping using mtr?

i think you just have to pop it in once and play part of it in the dvd player...

eject. quit dvd player.

then launch MTR and pop in the dvd.

oh so i should eject the dvd after playing it then open mtr and re-insert the disk? im not really understanding. from what i've read on the net i need to play the dvd to unlock the drive... since the disks have some sort of encryption. wouldn't ejecting the disk negate the previous playing of the movie?

You don't need to play the disc at all prior to ripping with MTR.
What exactly is rotten in Denmark?
