I wonder if anyone can tell me how I can force Safari to not load .pdf files in the browser window (inline). I really DON'T like it. I would much prefer Adobe Reader to lanch externally.

Um, don't install the PDF Browser Plug-in from http://www.schubert-it.com and you won't display PDFs inline. Out of the box, Safari doesn't view PDF inline, unless you're using Tiger pre-release builds.
If you've installed PDF Browser Plug-in and want to remove it, just go to ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins and trash the plug-in.

Yes it does, you need to open the quicktime control panel, click MIME settings and enable/disable .pdf viewing (images disclosure arrow).

Uh, no it doesn't. Safari does not view PDFs inline without a plugin. By default, it downloads the PDF and opens it in Preview.

Unless of course you installed Adobe Reader 7.x which places the AdobePDFViewer.plugin into the /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
So bottom line, you need to figure out which .pdf handler is displaying the .pdf files 'inline'. Then you can ask the question again

I'd like to know how to be able to print, after Safari has opened the .pdf inline for you. Neither computer (DT or PB) will print the file -- it starts up and then closes. I have to save the file and then re0open to print. Most annoying.

You can print directly from the Schubert plugin - not sure about the adobe one - but that seems to be what you're using.

Actually, it looks like we're both right and wrong, in a way. I tried what you described, removed the Schubert plug-in, and turned on PDF in the QuickTime settings. It indeed did cause Safari to use QuickTime to display the PDF inline. In a really, really sucky manner compared to the Schubert plug-in.
With that said, I doubt that's the way this guy has it set up since to get it that way you have to not only know that QuickTime could do this, but actually go turn it on since it's off by default. It might be worth looking into, though.
And if that Adobe plug-in is in there, get rid of the damn thing. The Schubert plug-in is the best - and it allows you to open the PDF with Preview by clicking the little diamond button in the upper left hand corner if you so desire. Without plug-ins, and without making funky changes to the QuickTime settings, though, the default action will be to download the PDF to the Desktop and open it with the default application, whether that be Preview or Adobe Reader.

IIRC, installing Adobe Reader 7 changes the default for Safari to open PDF's inline using the Adobe plugin which gets installed automatically with Adobe Reader 7. My guess is that this is what the thread originator is seeing.

Have you actually tried the Adobe Reader 7 plug-in in everyday use? It's about a billion times better than their plugin from Reader 5 on Mac OS 9, so don't judge it based on bad experiences with the old version.
Not only does the Reader 7 plugin launch and render just as fast as the Schubert plugin, it has every function, plus more, with more-clearly labeled buttons, and using Adobe's superior PDF rendering. (Sometimes Apple's PDF renderer goofs up!)
As soon as I tried the Reader 7 plugin, I ditched Schubert's and haven't looked back.

Yes, but the problem is that with the full version of Adobe Acrobat, if you remove the plug-in, Adobe may not start. Not so nice. Also, the plug in is a pain on slow PDF's.

I guess I don't know how you do that. Let's say I've clicked on a .pdf. It's opened in the window. Ordinarily, I would just click print and get the dialogue box and go to town. Instead, the print icon closes up and goes away -- and nothing prints. So how do I use the plug in, instead?
This is just one of those things that makes my Mac not as functional as it should be.
And it drives me crazy, too. So your help is much appreciated.

The damn thing was making certain applications take about 5 minutes to launch on machines in the lab. Removing the Adobe plugin immediately fixed the problem. Into the dustbin of history with you!

I print from the Adobe plugin, it works just as I'd expect it to, and I know the Schubert plugin worked just as well. I can't say why yours won't work!

When the hell did this turn into a thread about debating PDF plugins?
The topic was how to stop PDFs from loading inline, not "which PDF plugin do you think is best and why do the others suck?"... god you people have a worse attention span than a 2 year old.

Stop the senseless killing of PDFs around the world!!! In 2004, over a hundred million PDFs were carelessly deleted at the hands of vicious computer users. Newsletters, images, books... destroyed! You can help...
Every second you wait, another hundred PDFs disappear forever.

With all due respect to the person complaining we're off topic, this whole thread helped me solve the above problem. And in case anyone else has the same one...
I did indeed have a Schubert plug-in, but it was from 2003. The effect of it was to allow inline loading of .pdf files, instead of having them download separately. But it did NOT bring up a toolbar for printing, etc. So I downloaded a newer version and installed that. It works beautifully and something that was just irksome is no more. I'd always thought that plug in was $69 -- didn't realize that an at-home license was free.

Good Gawd!
21 posts and no one has told DVGuy he could simply
option-click the link to force the PDF to download.

or right-click then whatever the save as... command is in Safari. Can't remember atm. It's fairly obvious though, looking at it.
and if you're still limping along (either happily or unhappily) control click will do. Click-hold might also work, I dunno.

But he wanted Preview or Reader to open it as well. He'd also need a folder action attached to his download folder to accomplish that.

With all due respect. I just upgraded to Tiger and my computer, which used to download and open the pdf's in Preview now opens them inline as well, without my having changed anything (except, of course, the OS, which I recognize is a big deal). Anyhow, I don't have this AdobePDFViewer.plugin, according to Spotlight (TM), so I'm at a loss how to get it to automatically open in preview. This was what the original poster wanted, yes?

This is a "feature" of Safari 2. You can download them by option-clicking on the link.

If More Internet still functions on Tiger, you should be able to alter the PDF helper to your liking.

You can set this on the command line via "defaults."
