While hoping not to start an AOL/Browser war, the thread on “is iPhoto flawed” brought to mind another problem (and I didn’t want to hijack that thread). Also, I just don’t know if the fault lies with AOL or iPhoto.

So, to the problem: Installing AOL 10.3.6 breaks iPhoto 4.0.3.

Once the new AOL 10.3.6 is installed, one loses the ability to select, from iPhoto's Preferences/General pane: Mail Using "AOL". This capability is no longer selectable as it greyed out. Mail and Entourage are available (I have Entourage), but AOL and Eudora are both greyed out, but AOL 10.3.6 is definitely installed (in the Applications folder).

The above problem is evident on my PB G4/433 and DP G4/800, both with OS 10.3.8.

Repairing Permissions, running DiskWarrior and TTPro indicates no problems. Creating a new iPhoto preference did not help. A full run of Cocktail (cleaning caches, etc.) did not help.

FWIW: This problem did not exist with AOL 10.3.

And so to the question: Is this an AOL or iPhoto problem? And of course, suggested fixes and workarounds most appreciated.

Many thanks!

My suggestions would be:

(1) ditch AOL completely
(2) if (1) is not an option, consider using Mail.app to access/manage your AOL account (there was recently a thread on the required settings)

The issue has been resolved by a chap (or chapette) named Pooch63:

"A fix to the problem that AOL does not show up (ie is grayed out) in iPhoto is to change the name of the AOL application to America Online. Apparently iPhoto is looking for "America Online" while the application is named AOL.

Arrrgh! I really should have thought of that.
