I have the perfect tool for you.

It's called "Net Monitor." It's a tiny little app with an even tinier shareware registration fee that will show your in and out bandwidth as a graph, as lights, as text, or as text on a graph (my favorite).

You can stick it in the menu bar or leave it as a floating window. It handles bits per second as well as Bytes per second, and has all kinds of cool scaling and min-max settings.

Frankly, I'm surprised it's not more of a favorite in the Mac world, considering how compact, featured, and inexpensive it is.

I think that this is the right link; I can't look at the page because I'm at work. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/11677

The Network button in Activity Monitor shows you a live view as well; it should be displaying stats between reboots.
