finally AOL for OS X has gotten better. They are now taking advantage of the Netscape Geko Engine for browsing. There are also many other new features in this new version.

They've been using Gecko for quite a while now. Perhaps they've updated to a newer build, but they've used Gecko for years.

I thought they were using Gecko for a while, then decided to switch back some time ago.

The first version of AOL for OSX used a crudely-Carbonized version of the old IE/Mac engine. They switched to Gecko soon after that, and they've stuck with Gecko ever since. The only problem is, they have never updated the version of Gecko that they've used, so it's still Gecko 1.0 under there, even in the latest release.

I'm not sure if this was in the previous versions but accoring to the what's new:
Delivered First to Mac AOL Users

Integration of the new Netscape Gecko Web Browser, providing a fast and first rate Web browsing experience that delivers the very best programming on the Web.

Easy enjoyment of streaming video and audio content when accessing the AOL service through a high-speed Internet connection using Apple's QuickTime media player.

Host-based Favorite Places allow Mac computer users to be the first AOL members to enjoy a portable version of AOL's popular Favorite Places "bookmark" feature from any computer, just as the host-based address book allows members to access their Email addresses on the road from any computer.

The new AOL for Mac OS X is integrated into Mac OS X operating system for a seamless Mac experience. There is a "message counter" available in the Mac OS X Dock that displays the number of unread Emails and IM's.

Maybe I just haven't used it in a while

They've been using Gecko on the Mac since the second OSX release, but they have never updated it since that time. I have reason to know this for certain, and it drives me just as insane as everyone else.

The QuickTime support and host-based Favorite Places may be new, though.
