iMovIe and USB connection to VCR ?

I currently have iMovie 3.03 and it's great at grabbing footage from my Sony fire-wire equipped camera
However, I also want to capture directly from old VCR stuff - I have a USB adapter that lets me capture the footage using the HackTV sample app, or USB Vision but... the camera is never recognised by iMoive - so I have to import then convert into an acceptable format and... it's a huge waste of time !
So.... does iLife 05 actually improve this ?
Or should I add another step to the process and go from VHS to MiniDV and then to the Mac... every step of course degrading quality and taking time
Any other quick and easy (but good quality) suggestions ?
