i've been using camino as my default browser for the past month or so, after finding out how much it's improved of late. however one major problem has sent me running back into the ugly brushed metal arms of safari:

quite often when i'm typing text into a textarea box [such as used when posting on this very forum] camino's display will suddenly grind to a near halt, so that i'll type an entire sentence and then have to sit back and wait while camino s-l-o-o-o-w-l-y displays the letters i've just typed, one after the other like a retarded typist on mogadon.

there doesn't seem to be any rhyme nor reason as to the circumstances in which this happens, but it seems more likely to occur after i've been using a forum for a few minutes or so.

back in the distant cobweb covered corners of my mind, i seem to remember a similar problem afflicting the very early versions of safari, but i'm not absolutely sure.

any thoughts?

Are you using a nightly? The nightly builds are much improved in this area and others. Also, use Camino ExtraPrefs (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16078) to disable the animated GIFs. There are so many on this forum that it causes a slowdown in text boxes in every browser I use. But in general, entering text in boxes using Camino is fine with a nightly.

The nightlies haven't changed this (I'm using the latest one). It's the smiley gifs that give you problems. Try to downsize your window until you no longer see the smileys and you'll notice that the slowness will be gone.

or just add this to your user.js:
Code:
user_pref("image.animation_mode", "once");

I really don't get why browsers these days choke on animated gifs in such a way that you almost have to disable them while back in the day when animated gifs were all over the place you didn't notice any performance hit.

yes. it is a bit crap that a computer which can supposedly handle fullscreen full framerate video editing, grinds to a halt when confronted with a farty wee moving image about 10 pixels wide.

It's all about how things are being put onscreen. As far as I know, Firefox, for example, and maybe Camino, are still using QuickDraw and haven't yet moved to Quartz. Also, there's just outright crap threading. More work needs to be done and I'm sure it will be. Eventually we might even be able to mute those damned buzzing fly Flash ads without an external app like Audio Hijack Pro.

We just need to be patient although it's easy for those patience to wear thin when you have to look at hideous webpage buttons in Firefox, suffer s...l...o...w typing on messageboards in Camino and so forth.

The developers of Camino (and firefox) are aware of the slow type and gif animation bugs. But in both cases there isn't really any progress ass non of the devs really show interest.

Forum pages as the one you submit your comments on are a powerfull mix of both bugs revealing sub optimal drawing of pages.

Normally gif images should be painted within their own rectangle, but for some reason all the rectangles are added in one big rectangle causing serious overtime in rendering. Same goes for typing text, apperantly we are redrawing the entire paragraph instead of just the last line. And because both bugs are combined you get a huge mess of sub optimal drawing of pages.

Both bugs are filed (tough only recently) and I hope I can preasure some of the devs of Camino (FF mac) to take a good look and see if they can make some improvemnts.
