I'm working on a spreadsheet and it won't let me freeze the row. I select the row and the option under the window menu is greyed out. Anybody know how to get it back to normal?

Rather than selecting an entire row, select one cell and try the option. See if that works.

You don't select a row or column in the normal way. You grab the little widget at the top of the vertical scrollbar, or the one at the right of the horizontal scrollbar, drag to where you want the 'freeze' to happen and then 'Freeze panes'.

WTF?

This puts a split in the screen which is different from freezing.

As for the initial question is this option ever available? I played around selecting a few cells/columns/rows and it was always available.

Thanks for coming back. I never use Page Layout view, so didn't even consider that as a problem.

you don't need to split before you freeze.
