Well, my TiBook is now taking place as the secondary machine to a new Dual G5. I've never migrated fles between 2 OS X machines before, and while I anticipate it being pretty easy, I want to make sure I cover all my bases (moving stuff from 10.2 to 10.3).
I need to copy all my mailboxes to the new G5. All I have to do is copy the files in the Library folder for Mail, right? Where is the file that stores addresses for automatically completing them as you type them in the To/Cc/Bcc fields?
Anything else? I've got close to a gig of data in my Mail Library I'd like to migrate over.
TIA,
~ scott

There is a migration assistant on your new G5 that does that for you.

Every G5 came with this program. Click the link above to reveal it in Finder.

I did, and searched for it as well... it's not there. Any other ideas?

They are referring to the Setup Assistant that is run upon the first boot of a new Mac. The newer versions of the assistant contain the transfer agent. If you want it to run it again, there's an invisible file that you can delete - I just wrote about it a couple of days ago but cannot remember the location of the file and am too busy to look it up right now.

The invisible file is in the folder /var/db and named .AppleSetupDone. So open the Terminal and type cd /var/db and then type sudo rm .AppleSetupDone, enter your password and restart afterward.

thanks Big Mac -
That didn't do what I needed it to; it just ended up running me through setup again with no mention of importing data from a different Mac.
So, now I have 2 admin accounts & am registered w/ Apple x2
I copied all the mailbox data & that seemed to work, although I only set up one of the 8 or 9 accounts. I did have a message pop up when trying to access my Sent folder, saying something like I could lose data or something (I got it right before I tried the setup reset).
I'll keep playing later this evening... I can probably get something to work.
~ scott
p.s. File > Import Mailboxes just created an import folder w/ the set subfolders... not what I'm looking for it to do. I wannt this to function as it does on my PB.

That's impossible. Every PowerMac G5 did come with said migration assistant.

Well I saw no sign of a migration assistant, and I'm pretty sure I didn't miss anything. Setup isn't very complicated.

FWIW, everything *but* the auto address completion seems to be working fine by copying library data and re-setting up the accounts.

Glad to hear that you're getting things worked out, but out of curiosity, what do you mean by "resetting the accounts"? The new Setup Assistant is a newer piece of software; only more recent Macs have it so you may not. For reference, the new assistant is discussed as a Tiger feature on the Swedeish version of Apple's Tiger site.

sorry, resetting = re-adding them manually to the Mail app on the G5.
my G5 is a dual 1.8, purchased reconditioned, directly from Apple a week or so ago.
who knows... thanks for the input nevertheless.

Ah, that makes sense. I wonder what version of Panther you had installed; if it was older than 10.3.4 it would make sense why you would not have the new assistant. Sorry to inconvenience you, but don't worry about the second admin account or the superfluous Apple registration. (Apple does not seem to care.)

It's all good; thanks for the help. I don't know what was installed off the bat; I updated it pretty much immediately.
I can't find a couple of my mailbox folders though (from 2 seperate accounts). Everything looks and acts normal in Mail my PB but the mailbox isn't in home>library>mail. Any ideas where it might be hiding?

Every PowerMac G5 came with the migration assistant, even those that still came with 10.2. If you installed the system from the system CDs that belong to the PowerMac G5 it is impossible that you don't have the migration assistant. Unless Apple cloned some generic system onto the G5s drive that somehow doesn't have the migration assistant, it must be there. I see no reason why it should be missing for you.
