I'm going to download one of the G4-optimized builds of Firefox 1.01 (available here). One question though...

For the PPC 7447 in my rev. C 12" PBG4, which is the appropriate build - the 7450 version or the 7400 version??

You should use the ppc7450 build.
Open Terminal and type "machine", then check the output.

You do know that this will make basically zero difference to any "standard" build of Firefox right?

What makes you so sure about the "zero" difference? I'm using the optimized 1.01 on my Powerbook and it definitely feels faster (psychological?). I also just activated the pipelining trick and that sped things up quite a bit too.

I switched from the standard 1.0.1 to the G4-optimized one and didn't notice any change. I don't think any processor-specific optimizations would really make a difference in an app like this.

Maybe you actually are saving precious microseconds, but I bet it's mostly psychological.

Perhaps... but in the quest for ultimate speed, microseconds count.

...and if it's psychological, then I'm happy, and the end justifies the means. (The pipelining trick really does seem to work though):
