Yesterday my G5, without any previous problems, gave me two weird problems:

1) Mail quit and then twice required me to enter the account settings. Now it crashes upon opening.

2) Safari occasionally quits when I do a Google search for anything. Not every time, mind you, only occasionally.

I installed nothing new in the last week.

Anybody have an idea why?

Thanks,
Greg Feldmeth

1. Mail crashing always worries me - I sugges that you make a back up of your Mailboxes in case something odd happens to them.

If this were me, I would see if Mail was OK when you opened it under a different user. If you don't have a different user, create one. This will tell you if the problem is general to the application, or something to do with the files in your Home folder. It is probably the latter. You then need to remove the preference files related to Mail from the ~/Library/Preference folder onto the desktop, start Mail again and see what happens. If the preference files seem OK, look at the files in ~/Library/Mail. I once had a corrupt Signatures.plist file for example - Mail started fine when this file was removed onto the Desktop.

2. Safari. Not sure.

The previous poster has good advice -- almost always a crash on startup is a problem with reading the preferences file. Move your mail preferences file out of your ~/Library/Preferences folder and re-start. The crappy thing is you'll have to re-enter lots of your settings, but it should fix the issue.
