I was reading Smart Home Hacks and the author mentioned LanOSD which lets you make those beautiful transparent messages, like the ones which display when you eject a disk or change the volume.

It's AppleScriptable up the yang, and, as the name implies, can send these messages to all the computers on your network. The mind boggles at the possibilities.
