I'm sitting here at my favorite coffee house that offers free wireless and really caters to Macs. I decided to check my email using my email client Entourage. For some reason I wasn't able to send emails out. Entourage showed a message on the bottom screen saying connecting to SMTP server but never could so I thought there may be something wrong with Dot Mac. I decided to go on the web to the Dot Mac sight and send the email and it worked perfectly. Still cannot send email from the Entourage client but I can recieve email as I sent myself a test email from Dot Mac and Entourage received it.
Are my Entourage settings wrong or is this a flaw of Entourage?

u need the server settings from the place u are trying to email from...
you can recieve in entourage (or mail for that matter), but to send out, ask them their server settings (smtp.something.etc)
thats all it is!
from the web itself, its no problem.

I'm sitting here at my favorite Borders which has non-free/T-Mobile wireless and I've never been able to send email here (receives just fine). Some kind of relay problem? Neither Mail nor Entourage works.
Why do you use Entourage instead of mail?

Depending upon who your normal ISP is (i.e. who's providing you a SMTP server), they may not accept connections on port 25 from other service providers, like whoever is providing the wireless access. Alternately, the wireless access provider may be blocking outgoing messages on port 25, the port normally used for SMTP protocol.
The reason for these impediments? Spammers.
This is a likely explanation because you aren't having a problem connecting to your POP server to retrieve mail. That's rarely if ever blocked.
And, of course, if you use a webmail system, that's not likely to be a problem because your messages would be sent out via whatever SMTP server resides on the webmail server.

I have been using Entourage since Office 2004 was released. I didn't like it in Office v.X. It crashed a lot, had terrible junk mail filtering and it was slow but Entourage 2004 addressed all of that. I have been using it for so long I can't remember why I stopped using Apple's mail. It's not so much what Entourage can do, it's kind of what Apple's mail could not do. It's easier to use Entourage because it's intergrated with the MS Office suite. There were a few limitations that I just couldn't deal with in Apple's mail and customizing it was complicated at times and as far as sending Windows Friendly Attachments, Entourage does this automatically and takes the guess work out of deciding which version of Windows my email attachment would be compatible with and so I decided to use Entourage. I have several email accounts from different ISP's and I can set Entourage to work with all of them, Apple's mail worked with dot Mac and Hotmail and sometimes Hotmail was a struggle. I like how Entourage has everything in one window, tasks, address book, notes, mail without opening separate apps although I still use iCal because it's intergrated with dot Mac.
I also like Entourage's interface much better than Apple's boring mail GUI.
