I mistyped www.apple.com as www.applee.com in Safari and it launched iTunes and went to the music store. This just seems weird. Anyone else seen this behavior or have an explanation? Is this a security issue (browser launching other apps)?

It redirects to a URL with the protocol "itms", which iTunes declares in its Info.plist. This is no different than mailto: links opening up your mail client.

Thanks Chuck. Can this happen with any application? Say, for example, could a URL open Disk Utility and do something nasty?

The first time an app is opened through a protocol, you'll get this:

Before that dialog box was added, this used to be a particularly nasty exploit. But fortunately it should be okay now.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
