So I emailed a file to myself from my work computer to my .mac email address so I could get the file on my Powerbook at home. This was a document done in Pages.

When I try to open the file on my Powerbook I get the following message:

"The document "xxxxx.pages" could not be opened."

Also, files I have sent to other people have exhibited the same behavior. Other people can not open files I create on Pages, and vice versa.

Anybody have this happen?

Something to check:
File permissions. A .pages document will, by default, only be editable by its owner. You may have to manually change the file permissions so that others can read/write the file too.

When a user creates a file, they own that file. When a user copies a file, the new copy is owned by whoever created it. This extends to downloads as well, so it can't be a permissions issue. When you download something, you own the copy.

That said, this is strange. Is your document referencing some other file on your hard drive, maybe? If this other file weren't being sent alongside the .pages file, that might explain the problem.

Could it be because .pages files are actually bundles which your e-mail system is fubaring - try zipping the docs before e-mailing them to see if the archived files work.

I discovered this same issue the first weekend I owned Pages. I'll be happy if someone can suggest a fix, as this was something I was looking forward to doing. To do this in AppleWorks requires a couple extra steps.
