I just thought I'd write to say I have migrated 5 years' worth of emails to Gyazmail without any problem.

www.gyazsquare.com/gyazmail

No, I am not affiliated to Gyazmail in any way!

The program is fast and well featured.

The clincher for me is its structure: it keeps every single mail in a separate file. This means that there is no mail database to be corrupted. If the index file to a mail folder is deleted or becomes corrupted, the program simply rebuilds the index and no mail is lost. (I know this because I actually tested it).

So, if you are wondering which email client to use, give it a try! I know I was pleasantly surprised.

(It costs 18 USD)

Oops, forgot to mention it does not seem to do IMAP.... If that is what you are after, this app is not for you. Apart from that, it rocks!

Also, Mail.app in 10.4 will go to a maildir format (one file per email).

And it will keep mails in separate files in Tiger.

That does not sound as secure to me. What If I am getting maliciously spammed thousands of messages? That means that the filesystem will have to create thousands of individual files? And what about fragmentation, even for a moderate message load?

How would the thousands of messages added to one huge mbox text file be more secure?

Btw. Mac OS X defragments files under 20MB in size (a feature introduced in 10.3).
