Spreadsheets from Mac to PC get garbled

Occasionally, when I send an Excel spreadsheet from my Mac to a PC, the spreadsheet winds up garbled- lately showing up on the PC with dingbat fonts, even though I have "Send Windows Friendly Attachments" checked in the "Add Attachment" dialogue box in Mail.app.
It doesn't happen every time...
Does anyone have any idea how to avoid this highly irritating problem?

be sure to use a font that the Windows machine has installed?
