Hi all, I just upgraded to iPhoto 5, and I'm having some problems importing my old library. I start it up, and it goes through the whole process of importing the library, but then it displays "Loading images" forever, and never moves beyond that. I've tried it several times with no luck. Anyone have any ideas on what's causing this? Thanks!

Well, I've managed to get it to upgrade the iPhoto library, but I've got a new problem now. It shows all the photos in my library as gray boxes...I've tried restarting, no luck. Any ideas on this one?

Did you try repairing disk permissions with Disk Utility? If that doesn't work you may be looking at creating a new library and importing from the old one with the File->Add to Library menu.

Generally it's good practice to repair disk permissions after any software installation or upgrade before using the software.

Tried repairing permissions, no luck. I googled the problem, and found several other instances of the exact same problem (from problems upgrading the library, and then the gray boxes)...no one seems to have a solution that works. I'm gonna be a little peeved if I spent this money for nothing. Time to give Apple a call.

Apple has a solution posted on their iPhoto forums, I believe.

Repairing permissions never fixes anything. You might as well pick up your computer and shake it.

I've come to the same conclusion... why do so many people swear by it? I never have to repair permissions on my Linux or FreeBSD boxes, so why on OS X?

Well, I managed to fix it, thanks to the Apple Forums. I had to move my library to the desktop, create a new library, and then use the "add to library" feature to add the original library. Thanks for all your help folks!

Did you upgrade to iPhoto 5.0.1 first?

Yeah, the upgrade to 5.0.1 was the first thing I did. From all the stuff I've seen, it seems to be a not-so-uncommon problem. Hope Apple addresses it!
