I have a Dot Mac subscription. Several months ago SMTP stopped working in Mail running on a 17" PowerBook. This was only fixed by backing up my mail folders, deleting all settings and Mail folders, relaunching the app fresh and then importing messages from the back up.

Now the same thing has happened on my 12" PowerBook. I can't send any E-mail using my Dot Mac accounts unless I use webmail on the mac.com site. SMTP in Mail.app won't work at all.

Before I go through the process described above to reset the application I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this and also why o'why is this happening at all?

My .Mac mail works perfectly. Could your ISP be blocking access to the .Mac mail server?

yep - this sounds like it has nothing do do with "corruption" of anything.

More likely than not, your ISP is simply blocking the .Mac SMTP.

Use your ISP's SMTP server instead.

Interesting if true. How would SBC Yahoo know I'm sending my Email through .mac and why would they block me for doing so now and not before?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think SBC simply has to notice traffic on the SMTP port.
I had to help a client of ours recently -- his ISP suddenly and out of the blue blocked SMTP traffic to outside SMTP servers. Switching to his ISP's SMTP restored his Outlook functionality.

SBC is starting to block port 25 (the default SMTP port) in some locations. If you call them they should be able to open it for you.
