I have one window open (MacNN) and another is streaming a Real Audio feed (Live@17 from the Players Championship). Safari is the only app open (other than Finder) and my fan is constantly running. I opened Activity Monitor and Safari is using 65%. Is this normal ????

I guess it's normal then. Nice browser, Apple.

Are you sure that's not, "Nice plugin, Real"?

For reference, on my 1 GHz G4 tower, with the MacNN front page open:
28802 Safari 11.5%

Fan is on right now as well, and typing in this Reply window is S L O O O O O W W and Real is not running.

Fan comes on all the time when Safari is open. The only thing I can do to stop it is to disable JavaScript. Activity Monitor reports 10% Safari usage with JavaScript disabled, 50+% with it enabled.

Fan just came on, the only open app is Safari (this single window, no other tabs), JavaScript disabled.

Something must be wrong with this computer. It is bordering on useless for web browsing.

The reply window is slow. Safari's rendering of animated GIFs is ridiculously inefficient (I've heard this was fixed in 1.3, but that still ain't released). Most places don't use animated GIFs these days, though, so that shouldn't affect general Web browsing.

Flash can also suck pretty hard on mac too. That combined with animated gifs, like on forums, can really make it use a stupid amount of cpu. One thing that still bothers me, a pc will sit there with like 2% usage on the browser while there are some sites that will drive the mac up to 70% just viewing the page.

The worst is Apple's own website. I was ordering something earlier today and while changing a field in the billing address I maxed out the CPU on my ibook (see sig.). I have had the same problem with MacNN when I type out replies, but not always. I also use pithhelmet since flash ads slowed safari down soo much it was barely usable. (well really it drained my battery that I needed to stay alive so I could take notes in class.

Anyone know when Apple will release a browser that can handle JavaScript?

Uh...
<script>
alert('bah!');

doesn't work for you?
(Apple's JavaScript implementation is good, and gets alot faster in Tiger)

For what it's worth, there's a site where you can test your browser's Javascript performance. I forget the URL now. Anyway, it keeps track of statistics, and Camino on OS X was consistently the best performer - significantly faster than any Windows browser.

(Safari, needless to say, didn't perform as well.)

I notice this problem with those Flash banners. Like right now, while composing this, there's a flash banner which causes the CPU usage to go up to 70%.

I usually get fed up and switch over to Firefox. I have it installed with flash blocking extension that requires you to click the flash in order to launch it.

Or boycott lousy sites that let advertisers abuse viewers like that...

Oooops. Or is that what MacNN does?

I'm suprised more Mac users aren't complaining about the embarrassingly poor quality browers available. I'm a semi-recent switcher and would never go back to Windows but the Mac browsers leave MUCH to be desired.

Guess most members here don't do much browsing

What are you talking about? With the notable exception of IE 6 (which is no loss), all the bigshots in the browser game are available for Mac.

So which Mac browser "just works" all the time? I have tried Safari and Camino.

No browsers "just work" all the time, on any platform. Even IE6 breaks all the time; the only reason it seems to work is that people have figured out how to work around its brokenness. This said, most Gecko-based browsers -Firefox, Mozilla, Camino, and Netscape- do pretty decently most of the time. I use Firefox myself.

Let me rephrase:

Is there a Mac browser that handles JavaScript better than Safari?

Camino and Firefox both handle JavaScript better than Safari (in its 1.2.x incarnation, at least).

Second for PithHelmet. Can't imagine surfing the web without it.
