This has probably been asked before, but I can't find it. Apologies for any duplication of effort.

Acrobat Reader 7 wants to be the app that shows PDFs in browsers. I prefer Schubert's PDF Browser Plugin. To get that, I need to turn off the Acrobat Reader Preference for AR7 to grab all PDFs. But every time I set that preference, it works for a short time, and then AR7 resets itself and starts grabbing them again.

Question: How can I turn off this behavior in Acrobat Reader and have it stick?

1. I don't know what Schubert's PDF Browser Plugin is.
2. I don't know how you are setting the preference.

But anyway, are you selecting one PDF, doing a "get info", and setting the "Open with" application to Safari, and then using "Change all"?

Is that what you mean by setting the preference?

2. I don't know how you are setting the preference.

Open Adobe Reader 7.0. Open Preferences from the Adobe Reader menu. Choose the Category "Internet". You will (probably) find that the topmost item "Display PDF in browser using" [with following pulldown menu which only contains one item: Adobe Reader 7.0] is checked. Uncheck it. Confirm and close preferences.

At this point, if you have an alternative app that will display PDF files in Safari, etc., such as PDF Browser Plugin 2.2.1 (from Manfred Schubert) installed in /Library/Internet Plugins, this alternative will get called to display PDFs.

However, before long you will find, upon opening a PDF file in your browser, that Adobe Reader has taken over. Open the Application's preferences and you will find that the preference above is checked once again, despite the fact that you un-checked it.

This is the problem I am trying to solve.

Why don't you just delete the Acrobat plugin from /Library/Internet Plugins? You may as well get rid of Reprobate Reader while you're at it! Version 7 is the worst release yet.

Agreed. Acrobat Reader is the most bloated PDF reader I've ever seen.
