I'm using Omnidictionary - just highlight a word and type cmd= to look it up (although I've installed iceCoffee so I generally ctrl-click a word to look it up.) It's just a simple client so I can't imagine it being that much better or worse than macdict. I combine it with Dictatoro so I can lookup words without being connected to the internet.
