iChat (or your IM client of choice). Just send an IM to the number with a plus sign in front of it.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

In Ireland? I thought that only works in the US. Definitely doesn't in Germany. Here SMS' cost a lot of money so definitely nobody lets you send them for free via the Internet (be it e-mail or something else).

Ah, whoops. Guess I didn't look at the Location field.

Not sure if it's available in Ireland - but in the UK Vodafone has a service called Vodafone Mail - where their messaging is available thorough a Mail interface.

It allows you to send SMS'es via Mail - i.e. you send an email to 07xxx 1223456@vodafone.net and the number before the @ gets an SMS - and you get a 12p addition to your next bill.

Diggory: How does Vodafone bill the sender of the email? Or do you have to pay to receive an sms sent to you via email?

If the second option, couldn't an 'enemy' of yours that knows your number simply send you 100's of emails to that address, and make you pay for it?

just use one of the free online ones.

if you're with O2 you get 250free txts each month using webtxt. Think both vodaphone and meteor are similar.

Or non-mobile operators that let you send free txts are:
www.oceanfree.net
http://www.oxygen.ie/faq.php3

there are loads of others.. google it!
sheesh, that took 8 hours for me to be asked to change my sig...

The smtp server that bridges between mail and sms is authenticated - you have to be a Vodafone customer before you can use it.
