Why does Word open the file "Brief Design Review Reportv0.1.doc" and change its name to
"Brief Design Review #1195E9.doc"? I find this to also happen with files when using Powerpoint. I have not tested this issue with Excel. I am running OS X 10.3.8 and Microsoft Word X for Mac service release 1. This happens on my office mac as well as my two macs at home.

Office programs can't save (or even read) to more than 32 characters in the filename. Still happens with Office 2004.

A pitiful situation, given that the file was from a PC. Apparently Office for windows does not have this restriction.

Office 2004 Mac saves long file names (256 chars) just fine for me.

Could it have to do with there being a . in the name other than the one for the file extension?

But Office v. X did not have this ability, as far as I can recall.
