I just finished downloading a file. However, at about 90% done, the tracker went down, but I was still able to finish the download because some people were still seeding the file.
Will this affect the file in any way? It seems to work properly. How is this so? I thought the purpose of the tracker is to verify each and every bit of the file to see if it is accurate. Or is it just to keep track of who's got what and who needs what? I'm a little confused...

If the file finishes and Azureus verifies it, then of course it's OK. I don't know if trackers serve any purpose other than to connect you to peers. I've finished files before where the tracker went down, but I remained connected to people.
Actually, I always kind of wondered just what it was that verified that the file was intact.

The tracker only serves to introduce peers to each other, and to keep a finished copy of the file up in case no one else has all of it. As long as 100% of the file is available from other sources (that 100% can be distributed in any way across any number of sources, as long as it is 100%) you can successfully finish the download, and the resulting file will be identical to the seeder's. Azureus will check the validity of the file when it finishes, and will tell you if it's bad. You don't need the tracker to be online for this.

I'm pretty sure the tracker doesn't do that.
The torrent file itself contains checksums of all the chunks of the file. After each chunk is downloaded, your client will checksum it and compare to the value in the torrent file. If it doesn't match, it deletes that chunks and re-downloads.

Sorry, I sort of jumbled "tracker" and "seeder" together in my mind. You're right.

Wow. That's pretty cool... I didn't know that...
