imovie HD...problem with slowing footage

I recently upgraded to ilife 5. In imovie, I used to be able to slow down footage by making the speed indicator on the timeline view closer to the tortoise. In Imovie HD this has disappeared and instead is in the effects menu. The thing is when I go to apply a speed change, it renders it (and the time of the clip changes indicating that it is working), then when completed the speed is unchanged.
Has anyone else noticed this....imac G5 running Panther.

Just upgraded to Ilife 6 hoping that this problem would be solved....imagine my irritation when it still exists. I've tried searching the forum but could anyone give any advice. I was thinking I could delete the information for the effect and reload this but I'm not sure how this is done. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
