Is there any way to get Thunderbird to do the "check spelling as you type" function like Mail, Word, Safari, etc.?

Not currently, but it is heavily requested and thus planned for a future release, but I don't think there is a designated time frame.

I assume this is because it's not a cocoa app?

It's because firstly it's a cross platform app (so their spell checking implementation will have to be cross platform) and that the text areas are XUL like the rest of the app.

[Probably completely wrong on that last count]

FYI Thunderbird nightlies now have check spelling as you type, and it works quite well.

if you are to scared to try a nightly build:

ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.or.../latest-trunk/

you can use this:

http://www.supportware.net/mozilla/#ext8

i used it for what seems like ever before i discoverd that they finally got around to working it into thunderbird. it does the job, but it has more than a few quirks.

if i was you, i would use the thunderbird nightly build.
