I am a new Mac user and am wondering what the best AV software for the ibook is. I want to install software even though i know that Mac aren't as suseptable to viruses I want to be safe. If any has any suggestions let me know. Thanks.

Its extremely difficult to answer that question. I ran Virex for a while (because it was free to .Mac subscribers). It was mildly annoying and never found anything ever (it gave a few "caution" warnings about potential viruses that turned out to all be benign.

So ... how good was that software ? Honestly, I have no idea.

To say Macs aren't "as susceptible" to viruses as PCs is a gross understatement. There are no viruses for Mac OS X. None at all. Period.

My advice is not to bother with anti-virus software. It's an unnecessary cost and hassle. Some virus scanners (*cough* Virex and Symantec) are also known to cause stability issues.

If a single virus ever shows up in the wild, you'll be sure to hear about it. Until then, spend that money on something important, or buy some software that will actually be useful. Panic (www.panic.com) and Omni make some great products for the Mac.

There are no known Mac OS X viruses to date. Be careful with what software you download (trojans), weird attachments you didn't ask for go straight to delete. If a mac virus is ever released you'll probably hear of it long before it can reach your mac.

Remember AV software needs to be updated to protect you against a virus and is useless since no viruses exist.

Oh, and the "being a good neighbour" when it comes to Windows viruses are also moot. Just don't manually send weird attachments you get to Windows-using friends
