Hi,
This is my second mac and when i was on the pc i mainly use to youse icq.Now since i chat doesnt support multiple networks and it doesnt seem the new version in tiger will. What does everyone recomend. From what i can see you actually need a .mac account for it to work and at $158 oz it's out of the question.

What do you recommend

proteus has a nice interface but who functional is it?

or should i go with audium.

ICQ has a Mac client. It is, admittedly, not up to date relative to the PC clients, but it gets the job done. Most of the third-party IM clients also support ICQ, if you prefer to go that route.

You don't need a .mac account to use iChat, but it only supports the AOL Instant Messenger protocol at the moment, so you need either .mac or AIM. This will be changing in Tiger, when Jabber support is added. One of the things Jabber is famous for is its gateways which allow it to access other services, including ICQ, so in this way iChat essentially gets an indirect form of multi-protocol support.

You can get an .Mac trial account. Most features will expire after 60 days, but you can use it with iChat for ever without paying. You can also use an AIM account with iChat. You can reach ICQ users from iChat.

Only indirectly, but yes. What you would need to do is set up an account on a Jabber server, point that account at your ICQ account, and point iChat at the Jabber account. You could then also point the Jabber account at any Yahoo, AIM, MSN, or other accounts you have, and access them all at once through iChat.
plus dont aol own ichat
They own AIM (and ICQ, actually), but they don't own iChat itself. iChat was developed with cooperation from AOL, such that iChat is one of a very small number of "approved" third-party AIM clients.
