Anyone know of a program and or hardware that will allow TV/Cable to be played on a laptop. I don't have a tv in my room and I would like to be able to have a tivo type program that worked with my computer. Any thoughts?

This can be done, but it's more than a simple "install the program and you're done"

If you just want to watch live tv on the laptop, you can do it with a server in your house running a TV tuner and piping it into Video Lan Server, and then watching the TV on your laptop with Video Lan Client.

If you want TiVo-like functionality, check out www.mythtv.org

Again, you'll need to run a server (aka backend) to record/buffer/stream the video.

According to the developers, they've almost finished the frontend for watching the video.

But again, this isn't something for the average Joe to setup. You've been warned!

El Gato has a number of products that could work. You could also use the Mac as a front-end to a MythTV back-end (presumably running on linux)> Or there are solutions using a ReplayTV box.

These are great suggestions. What i'm looking for is a simple solution. Idealy I would like some pci card to stick in the side of my laptop to allow me to watch tv and the ability to record.

Not going to happen really. Look at the Elgato stuff and see if it will work for you, it's a dedicated box, but it does exactly what you want and isn't too bulky.

Are there any external USB TV tuner devices that have multiple tuners (for 2 (or more!) input/cable lines)?

Get an Eye TV USB. It'll do just want you're looking for. Cable plugs into a box. USB from the box to the 'puter. It has a built-in tuner and you can program it record shows whenever.

Yeah... That's not going to happen.

Perhaps a PCMCIA Card:

or USB2:
