Ok so i decided to buy a Mac because I wanted to try something different. I have had the ibook a few months and now I have software hangs and crashes on a daily basis. I thought macs were supposed to be more stable? Mostly the software that is crashing is DVD Player and itunes. Both of which should run flawlessly on a brand new mac (at least I would think so.)I get a spinnin wheel for several minutes sometimes. What exactly is going on here? And how can I fix this?

Do software update and repair permissions. Run cocktail. Add more ram. Try not to have to many apps open at once... etc.

Interesting problems... I can't really remember the last time I had a program crash. What are your system specs? And how many programs do you have open at once? If you only have like 256 megs of memory, and 14 apps open, therein lies your problem.

Anyway, if you could be more specific that would be good.

Post the crash logs of iTunes and DVD Player please (if DVD Player does produce one – I'm not sure it does, it doesn't like the debugger).

I have a 12" ibook (3 months old), upgraded RAM to 768mb. 40gig HD.

There doesnt even have to be many programs open for it to crash.

Ill try to grab the logs next time it crashes.

To me that sounds very much like defective RAM. Take out the additional RAM and use the machine for some time. Do the crashes go away?

I do not mean to come down on you, but simply because you're having trouble does not mean that it's appropriate to denigrate the platform.

Given that he has made a decision to come to the "light" I think he can be slightly annoyed if his experience has been "dimmed".

What you are experiencing is not normal. I have an old 667 with a GB of RAM and can routinely have 6-10 apps running at a time (admittedly not CPU intensive apps) with no issues. Being a big internet user it is only when I have about 50 windows open that OmniWeb starts to choke and beachball.

I would also be looking towards RAM

Ok, an update.. After testing and testing.. i have come to the conclusion that MOST of the crashes occur when watching a DVD and it comes to the end of the movie (last 5 minutes).. Could this be related to the dvd drive itself? maybe some kind of calibration problem?

POssibly. Or it could be the Disk itself. I've had disks playing then have DVD Player crash on me. I've actually cleaned the DVD and it fixed the problem. try that and see if it works.

It's possible. I have a few questions:
  • Does happen with just one DVD, or does it happen with many?
  • Let's consider one specific movie that shows this problem (any movie will do): does it always happen when you play this movie, or only sometimes?
  • If you don't mind my asking, could you give an example of a movie that doesn't work for you? Perhaps someone here also has the movie and can try it on their own machine.
