It seems like you can't rotate a label in AddressBook.app so that it prints with the address faces sideways (tops of the letters on the left, bottoms on the right). Is this true? What a pain!

My copy of Address Book can. In the print dialog there is a choice for Orientation. It's there that you select landscape or portrait.

From Address book meue choose File -> Print and a dialog showes.
In the left side of the dialog the paper are shown, and in the right side all your options are shown. There are a option labled "Orinetation" where you can select how to print. It's just above the Attributes box...
And when selecting different orintations ( there are only 2), the paper in the left side will update to the selected orientation.

I also do not see an option for a landscape layout. Usually, the landscape option is part of Page Setup... but Address Book doesn't have that option.

The orientation option must not be supported by your printer driver. Here is my dialog...
So if you can't get the orientation control appear, here is a workaround: Rather than printing directly from Address Book, just do a print preview. Then rotate the page while it's open in Preview.

Don't think that will work, because I need to print the text in landscape, not portrait. Rotating it it'll still be in portrait, just facing in a different direction, which is no solution.

Of course you're right. I wasn't thinking.
But I realize that I was even more mistaken...apparently the orientation is only selectable when you're printing lists. When I selected Mailing Labels the orientation buttons went away. Now that makes to me because the label stock is generally die cut in portrait orientation.
It looks like you're not really printing mailing labels. Are you trying to individually address postcards? If so, then Address Book probably isn't the right solution. I would recommend you try Addressix. It's a very nice envelope printing program that's fully integrated with Address Book. You can set a custom paper size for your postcards.

Essentially, yes. They're actually 4" x 6" Avery Print or Write Labels (255454), which I like to use for individual package labels (It saves a lot of time and waste for me), but in printing terms that's identical to a postcard. Anyhoo, while I really wanted the convenience of printing directly from the Address Book, NeoOfficeJ does a decent enough job of it, and it's free, so there lies my ultimate (albeit imperfect) solution.
I just realized that I should have named the thread "No Landscape Printing." Oh, well!
