I currently own Macromedia Fireworks, and use it for all of my design needs. I got it and the rest of Studio MX for $199, which I feel was a great deal.
Lately, I've been wanting to create professional looking web graphics, and it seems somewhat hard to do so using Fireworks. I have the feeling that if I were to use Photoshop, I'd be producing better images.
Of course, $299 for Photoshop is quite expensive, as I would only be using it as a hobbyist. I must admit that I'm sick of professors going, "You have used Photoshop, right?" That happened to me a few weeks ago. Argh. I mean, I've used it, but don't know it...for obvious reasons.
Anyway, does Photoshop Elements contain the features I'd need? In other words, would it do a better job than Fireworks? I'd much rather get Photoshop, and then learn all of the advanced features, but that's not an option. I don't know which features I'd actually be using, so it's hard for me to compare all three of these applications. I'm very computer savvy, and I'd like to learn as much as necessary to produce great images.
Does anyone have any advice?
Let me reiterate that I simply don't know if I'd need the "advanced" features of Photoshop. I want to learn advanced image processing, but perhaps Photoshop Elements is as "advanced" as I need? To put things in perspective, I've just begun doing image processing work using MATLAB.

Adobe has a trial version of Photoshop you can download for free from their website. Just look around. It's a full-featured version that expires after 30 days.

It doesn't really matter in the long run Macromedia and Adobe are merging.

To be honest, it's getting comfortable with the UI and how the app does things. For me, I'm used to how Fireworks does things and how I go about doing what I want. I've tried Photoshop before and it seems awfully over the top for what I want to do (icon design and web design).
If you feel comfortable and are used to Fireworks I'd stay stick with it -- but if you feel it's constraining then try out the Photoshop trial.
Are there (if any) things you feel lacking or restraining with Fireworks, or just curious to see if you can do more with PS?
Edit: A bit rambling, I guess the point I'm making is that just because there're more available to you with PS doesn't mean it'll automatically make your work better or more complex.
