Newbie quetsions: I noticed for iChat and Adium and Proteus, etc. that the profile option is so dingy. On Windows, you could format the profile with colors, links, and all kinds of things, but for Mac there doesn't seem to be many options. How can I put a link in to my profile? I can't find an option to change the font or colors, etc.

Also, why doesn't iChat or Adium seem to allow "direct connecting"?

Yes I would agree--the profile options are less than satisfactory in iChat, and I don't think theres much ayone can do about it either.

as for direct connection... Things are a little wierd, but it is possible. Im not absolutely sure, but it seems to me that only the iChat user (and not the AIM user) can start a direct connection, just by drag&dropping a picture into the text area and sending it, or going to buddies > send direct message. Some of my friends who are sadly still on that clunky "Windows" thing cant seem to send me hyperlinks images etc. (hyperlinks, that is, other than those automatically created by puttin in a URL)

iChat has perfect Direct Connect support. Adium doesn't quite have it down yet. You can do plenty with your profile in Adium, though I guess not like the official AIM client. Does iChat even have a profile option?
